CELEBRATE WITH US AT HOMECOMING: September 24

4:15 p.m. — Homecoming Parade Join us on a walk from Van Dyke Park to Fairfax High School. Alumni are encouraged to participate. Guests are encouraged to park at Fairfax High School parking lot. Fairfax City will provide complimentary shuttle service to the start of the parade route. In case of rain, the parade will be canceled.

4:30 p.m. — Tailgate Party The festivities will be held in Fairfax High’s parking lot. Food will be served, the band will provide music, and there will be games, activities, and spirit wear and anniversary items for sale.

5 to 6:30 p.m. — Building Tour Meet at Entrance #1.

6:45 p.m. — Football Pre-Game Activities

7 p.m. — Kick-Off Don’t miss this great game — Fairfax High vs. Langley

Half-Time Homecoming floats will be presented, and the Homecoming Court and Queen will be crowned.

Post-Game Fireworks Celebrate with us immediately following game with what is sure to be an amazing display.

9:30 to 11 p.m. — Post-Game Alumni Gathering Join us after the game at the Fairfax Army Navy Country Club, 3315 Old Lee Highway.

Back to School 2010: Happy 75th Anniversary to Fairfax High School

As we welcome students and staff back to school this September, we are thrilled to invite you to celebrate the 75th anniversary of our beloved Fairfax High. Festivities will begin with a Homecoming Parade on Friday, September 24, at 4:15 and continue through the evening. (See the entire list of events, at right.)

A new school year brings some other changes, including the redesign of our City School Close-Up newsletter. We’ll be publishing six issues this year, and in each you’ll learn about something new and exciting in the field of education.

In upcoming issues, we’ll be interviewing local and national experts and writing about:

  • The Importance of Diversity in Our Schools (November-December)
  • The Value of Cultivating Creativity (January-February)
  • How to Prepare Your Kids for College (March-April)
  • The Power of Resilience (May-June)
  • Graduation 2011 (July-August)

Page 2: Looking Back at Fairfax High. School board member Mitch Sutterfield, a former Fairfax High student and longtime teacher, shares his insights about the milestones, magic, and many changes he’s seen at Fairfax High.

Page 3: Daniels Run. “As we celebrate our 10th anniversary this year, I am proud to report that the school again made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP),” says Principal Kathy Mullenix. Learn more about her academic plans for 2010-2011.

Page 4: Providence Elementary. The school made AYP again, and Principal Jesse Kraft tell us about changes that will happen this year, and in a sidebar he shares the latest posting from his blog.

Page 5: Lanier Middle School. While the school has grown significantly since it opened in 1960, Principal Scott Poole explains how it still retains many attributes of a “small town” school.

Page 6: Fairfax High School. “As school moves forward, our staff seeks to build a culture of sustainable continuous improvement,” says Principal Dave Goldfarb. “This work centers around a focus on strengthening areas which have served our students well.”
